Creating Newsletters: Benefits and Stats

Creating newsletters is a great marketing tool for one big reason: Since you only send your newsletters to those that ask for it, you are already selling to a very warm market!

Your newsletter will help you build a relationship with your opt in subscribers. The more you target your audience, the more successful your newsletter will be. Focus on putting out a quality newsletter that your subscribers look forward to reading. Do that, and you will find out that, generally speaking, creating newsletters is most beneficial because newsletters have a higher click-through-rate than other online advertising options. However, once you get subscribers to your newsletter, you then have to get them to click the links back to your website.

You will probably be sending out your newsletter using some third party service provider. Nothing wrong with that, many companies use 'em and they work very well. Most newsletter service providers give you the following information: bounce rate, open rate, unsubscribe rate, and click through rate. Here is an overview.

Bounce Rate

This is the percent of your addresses that were undeliverable for one reason or another. This could be because the address is not used anymore or due to a simple typo. Obviously you want this rate to be as low as possible.

Open Rate

This is the percent of the mail opened from the amount that was actually delivered. This simply means that these folks opened your message. The better you write your FROM and SUBJECT lines in your messages, the higher this rate will be. Your open rate can also vary depending on when you send your newsletter.

Unsubscribe Rate

This is the percentage of folks that would like to opt out of your newsletter. They usually unsubscribe by clicking a link or sending an email. If you use a double opt in process, in which subscribers get an email asking them to click a link to actually subscribe, you will have a lower unsubscribe rate.

Click-through Rate (CTR)

From the newsletters that were opened, this is the percentage of folks that clicked a link back to your site. CTR = clicked links / number of opens. Your CTR depends on you headline, content, number of links and many other factors.

You can use all of the information to determine the success of your newsletter. You can also make adjustments to make the newsletter better depending on how your readers are responding. Creating newsletters is something you should definitely pursue. Seek more information elsewhere on this site.

One final note: the older your list, the higher your bounce and unsubscribe rates will be and the lower your open and CRT rates. This is just a fact of life. Unfortunately.
